The most embarrassing event in my young life happened at a swimming event in Woodfibre B.C. As a member of the UBC swim club, coached by the famous long-distance swimmer Marilyn Bell.
It was an exciting trip for us young teens, with just one problem for me. For reasons unknown I had lost my swim trunks just the day before! So with no time to buy another, as a last minute substitute, I used my dad’s swim trunks, BIG MISTAKE!
My only recollection of the competition is a race in which I came in dead last! My dad’s old fashioned cotton swim suit was so heavy when wet, not to mention oversized, it literally acted as a drag anchor! What’s more I made a premature dive that required a second start!
Even greater embarrassment was when the ‘fly’ on my overweight wet suit had come open! Not only was I the last one of my swim team to exit the pool, but with whole town population as audience no less!
Only a very friendly female team member salvaged my dignity by quickly wrapping me in a towel as I exited the pool! Indeed that was the most embarrassing incident of my young teenage life 🙂
