COYOTE JUNCTION   Leave a comment

Coyote and Badger team up hunting gophers!

Don’t want to mislead anyone by this title.  The purpose is a commentary on pets and their vulnerability to coyote’s.

I have lots of coyote’s near my rural home, seldom seen, more often heard.  When I make the rounds of 30 acres, I often see evidence of their hunting and scat.

Occasionally I surprise them, or they me, and they study me with their piercing eyes, nearly motionless, then quickly melt into tall grass or whateverB cover is near. No personal aggression seen so far, perhaps they sense a respect on my part.

People commonly walk their pet dogs in the neighborhood.  Some drive to the area I live in just to take their pets for a walk, others for less honorable purposes. still no reports of attacks by Coyotes, as has been the case in urbane areas.

What interests me is that the coyotes have no owner or shepherd to care for them, and they will prey on pets at times, usually at night.  Of course then they are described as vicious in the eyes of pet owners.

But I would like to say that I don’t regard them in that way.  They follow their God-given instincts to provide for themselves and their cubs with no help from pet-owning humans or anyone else.  In fact mice, shrews, and rabbits are the mainstay of their diet. Those are plentiful in my area.  They leave virtually no waste behind, save for an occasional blood stain!

Their plaintiff night cry’s, most often by the cubs, and their independent nature can touch the heart.  Unlike pet dog barking, usually just complaining about being neglected, and rightly so, coyote’s on the other hand socialize in their own unique way with family and each other.

As solitary as they are, they do have close nit families.  Their cries may be instigated by a distant police siren, or some unknown signal.  We can only wonder, but suddenly, day or night, they may all begin to cry out together with related yelping.  Then, unexpectedly, it abruptly stops.  Perhaps a full moon can trigger it, who can say?

I just feel they are misjudged and unappreciated, just as many people are.  All part of  earth’s marvelous creations.
