No pet person   Leave a comment

       Not a pet person

        (or Ailurophile)

Not a pet erson, so-called, per se
but feeding a feral cat each day
darned if I know whatever to say
seems new heartstrings begin to play
maybe reflecting our natural way
caring for life; God’s personal clay.

Canine revenge!   Leave a comment

Years ago I was a Realtor surveying an mostly abandoned, or at least defunct old auto court (old term for motel), in North Surrey. There was one occupied unit with a high wire fence pen in front of it. Two large dogs were languishing inside, lying on the ground and seemingly completely docile. So I obtained a key from the manager, who lived in a separate house, and, as I saw it, being my duty to inspect the occupied unit, unlocked the gate to their cage

Before I could blink and eye, those two dogs reacted like being shot out of a cannon, they brushed past me like Greyhounds chasing a mechanical rabit!  They brushed past me, thankfully having no interest in me, since one was a large german shepherd, the other a large pit bull!

In seconds they were out of sight, apparently knowing exactly where. The pit bull barely able to keep up with the shepherd, but their intent was clearly united and very purposeful, as indeed I later learned!

After apologetically returning the key to the manager and returning to my office, I received an angry phone call. It was a neighbor next door to the auto court property complaining the dogs had killed his cherished pet cat!

I can only assume his cat had been taunting those two dogs while they were locked in their cage, as cats are will do, for who knows how long. But that did not go without retribution as soon as they had the opportunity. In short order they had executed canine vengeance!

Naturally I was sympathetic with the pet cat owner, but really didn’t feel responsible for those canine actions by having innocently facilitated animal justice!

Veterans Paws program   Leave a comment

The dog adoption program for veterans is very touching. Clearly it mediates some of the emotional turmoil men who have been exposed to wartime conditions. Emotions of extreme fear, horror, or pure anxiety; feelings non-veterans cannot even imagine. Its a great program because of the non-judgmental and supportive nature of canines for sure.

My only comment as a non-combatant RCN Sailor of years gone by is that this program reveals our basic human need for love and understanding.

With utmost respect to the reader of this post: If genuine hope for a loving future is your desire, it can be found in the prophecies of the holy Bible. Therefore please, please, visit JW.org where I promise you will find that support!!

Black Cat   Leave a comment

It doesn’t know me, and I don’t know it, male or female. But it has been a local feral cat entity for years.  I only know its black bob-tailed butt. It may or may not be the same one that came up on my back railing and peered at me in a kitchen window when I first moved in 8 years ago.

Indeed that cat peered into my kitchen, and me, as if inspecting who had moved in.  And not many weeks afterwards as I was sitting on my very private rear sundeck, the same cat came struggling past with a dead rabbit in its jaws that was equal in size to the feline itself  to my amazement!  It was no-less similar to an African leopard carrying a recently killed gazelle to tree storage!

That was year’s ago, so I’m not sure if the current feline is the same one, or perhaps even the offspring of that highly efficient hunter.

In any case I only see it in fleeting moments, as I did tonight.  A ghostly image disappearing around my garden shed or garage. Leaving a remnant of canned salmon or sardines may be well appreciated but not acknowledged by my shadowy neighbor.

But how it has so-far managed to elude regular known predators including coyotes, raccoons, and eagles, not to mention freezing nights, for years, is hard to image, perhaps a case study for military scientists.

In any case it will continue to have my deep admiration for its independent survival skills.
